Pholiota microspora is a basidiomycete fungus known for its role in wood degradation within forest ecosystems and fruit orchards. In agricultural contexts, it acts as a wound parasite, primarily attacking fruit trees that are already stressed by environmental factors, pests, or mechanical injuries. The fungus plays a complex role in the decay process, slowly degrading lignocellulose components of the wood tissue.
Common hosts include various pome and stone fruit trees, such as apple and pear trees. The fungus typically gains entry into the tree through bark wounds, frost cracks, pruning cuts, or cavities left by broken branches. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the heartwood, slowly compromising the structural integrity of the tree's internal vascular system and supporting tissues.
Symptoms of the infection often remain hidden until the fungus produces visible fruiting bodies on the surface of the trunk or branches. These mushroom clusters are a definitive sign of advanced wood decay inside the host. Other indicators include yellowing foliage, reduced terminal growth, and localized dieback of branches, which often become brittle and prone to breaking during high winds or heavy fruit loads.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of this fungus include high humidity levels and frequent rainfall, which facilitate spore germination on exposed wood surfaces. The spores are typically wind-dispersed, allowing the pathogen to move from decaying logs or nearby infected trees into healthy orchards. A lack of proper ventilation in the canopy can also create stagnant, humid pockets that promote further fungal growth.
