Pholiota spumosa is a wood-decaying fungus that primarily acts as a saprotroph, decomposing organic matter, but it can also affect compromised or weakened trees in forest and orchard environments. From an agronomic perspective, it is identified as a pathogen that contributes to the degradation of woody tissue in conifers and some hardwoods.

The fungus targets a wide range of woody plants, particularly those stressed by environmental factors, pests, or mechanical injuries. By colonizing the inner tissues of the trunk or root system, Pholiota spumosa disrupts the structural integrity of the tree, often beginning its colonization at the site of existing bark damage or deep fissures.

The primary symptom is the emergence of clusters of yellow-brown mushrooms on the affected tree bark or near the base of the trunk. Internally, the fungus causes significant enzymatic degradation, leading to wood rot. This process weakens the structural support of the tree, making the infected specimen highly susceptible to wind-throw and mechanical failure.

Development and spread are strongly correlated with high humidity levels and poor site sanitation. The fungus spreads via airborne spores, which germinate rapidly on damp, damaged surfaces. Shady and poorly ventilated areas within plantations or orchards are especially conducive to the proliferation of Pholiota spumosa.

Effective management requires a proactive approach centered on sanitation and environmental control. Minimizing the availability of decaying wood is key to preventing outbreaks. Essential protection measures include:

  • removing decaying stumps and woody debris from the growing area;
  • treating bark injuries with protective fungicides or wound dressings;
  • maintaining proper tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation;
  • ensuring adequate sunlight and air circulation within the canopy.
