As a member of the Strophariaceae family, it interacts with forest soil and tree tissues, often acting as a facultative parasite that exploits vulnerable or stressed hosts.
The primary hosts for this fungus include various species of conifers, such as spruce and pine. The pathogen typically enters the host through root wounds, trunk injuries, or areas where the bark has been damaged. Once established, the mycelium spreads through the woody tissues, initiating decay that weakens the tree's internal structure.
