Description
Pholiotina is a genus of fungi that can act as opportunistic plant pathogens, particularly affecting the root systems and seedlings of various crops. While many species are known as saprotrophs living on organic matter, they can transition to parasitic behavior under conditions that stress the host plant, leading to stunted growth and root decay.
The pathogen primarily causes root rot or collar rot, depending on the host species and environmental conditions. The mycelium penetrates the root tissues, disrupting water and nutrient transport, which eventually causes systemic wilting and chlorosis in the affected plants. This fungal disease is often underestimated until visible signs appear.
Symptoms of an infection include:
- premature wilting even when soil moisture is adequate;
- browning or necrosis of the primary roots;
- stunted vegetative growth compared to healthy plants;
- presence of small, brownish mushrooms appearing near the base of the stems in wet soil.
Development and spread are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity and poor soil drainage. Soil that remains waterlogged for extended periods provides an optimal substrate for Pholiotina mycelium to proliferate and reach the host plant's root system, especially in monoculture settings where organic buildup is high.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Essential practices include improving soil drainage, practicing crop rotation to interrupt the pathogen's life cycle, and avoiding excessive irrigation. Chemical control using fungicides may be necessary in severe outbreaks, combined with strict sanitation to remove infected plant debris from the field.
