While primarily acting as a saprotroph, in an agricultural context, it is often associated with disturbed soil environments where organic matter accumulates excessively. It is not a primary plant pathogen, but its metabolic activity can create unfavorable conditions for delicate crop root systems.
The organism is a basidiomycete fungus that thrives in nutrient-rich soils. Its role is essentially that of a decomposer, yet in high-density greenhouse environments or poorly maintained fields, it can be considered a nuisance. Its type of infestation is typically categorized as an opportunistic soil-borne interaction rather than a direct parasitic infection.
Affected crops include lawn grasses, potted ornamental plants, and various greenhouse vegetables. The fungus typically emerges where there is high moisture, poor drainage, and an abundance of decaying plant debris. It is highly sensitive to the ecological state of the substrate and is common in soils high in peat or compost.
Key symptoms include the emergence of small fruiting bodies near the plant base and the visible presence of white mycelial mats in the rhizosphere.
