This pathogen is classified among the anamorphic (imperfect) fungi and is characterized by the production of pycnidia — specialized fruiting bodies that generate spores, which allow the infection to spread rapidly across cultivated areas.

The primary host plants for this pathogen are members of the Ranunculaceae family, particularly various species of anemones (windflowers). The disease affects both wild-growing varieties and ornamental cultivars used in landscaping and floriculture, significantly reducing their visual appeal and compromising the overall vitality of the plant.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as distinct spots on the leaves and stems. These spots typically appear circular or irregular with a dark margin, and over time, small black dots known as pycnidia develop within the affected areas. Under conditions of high humidity, the infected tissues may undergo decay, leading to premature leaf senescence and overall plant weakness.

The development of the disease is closely tied to environmental conditions. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderately warm temperatures create an ideal environment for spore germination and the subsequent colonization of plant tissues by the fungal mycelium. The infection is most commonly spread via water splashes during rain or through contaminated gardening tools and may persist in plant debris within the soil.
