The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Phoma araucariae. It is a known pathogen that specifically targets Araucaria species, leading to blight symptoms. This fungus belongs to the group of coelomycetes, which typically produce spores within specialized structures embedded in the plant tissue, enabling them to survive under varying environmental conditions.
The disease primarily affects Araucaria trees in both indoor and nursery settings. The fungus targets the needles, soft young shoots, and occasionally the succulent bark of the main stem. Young specimens are particularly vulnerable, but mature plants can also suffer significant damage during periods of environmental stress or poor maintenance.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as small, irregular reddish-brown or dark lesions on the needles. As the infection progresses, the lesions expand, causing the needles to wither, turn yellow, and eventually drop prematurely. Under magnification or with the naked eye, small black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia can be seen on the necrotic tissue, signaling active spore production.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Phoma araucariae include high relative humidity, stagnant air, and frequent overhead watering. The fungus thrives when moisture remains on the foliage for extended periods, facilitating spore germination and entry into the plant's vascular system. Physical damage or insect wounds can also serve as entry points for the pathogen.
The economic and aesthetic impact of this fungus is significant, as it leads to defoliation and branch dieback, severely diminishing the decorative value of the tree. Effective management involves improving air circulation, avoiding overhead watering, and strictly adhering to sanitary practices. Chemical control using fungicides (such as copper-based or systemic products) is recommended in cases of heavy infestation to prevent further spread.
