Phoma bismarckii is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Phoma genus, known for causing significant leaf spot diseases in various ornamental plant species, with a particular impact on palm varieties such as Bismarckia nobilis. The fungus functions by colonizing the leaf tissue and producing pycnidia, which are microscopic fruiting bodies that release conidia to facilitate secondary infections during the growing season.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are ornamental palms grown in nurseries and greenhouses. When the conditions are favorable, Phoma bismarckii can rapidly compromise the health of the plants, leading to severe leaf necrosis. This not only causes economic losses by degrading the aesthetic quality of the stock but can also weaken the overall vigor of the host plant, making it susceptible to secondary stressors.

Typical symptoms include the appearance of necrotic lesions on the leaves, which often present as brown or dark grey spots, sometimes bordered by a distinct darker margin.
