Description

The fungus Phoma costaricensis is the causal agent of a severe plant disease known as coffee phoma. It is a pathogen that specifically attacks coffee trees, causing significant agricultural damage in regions where climatic conditions favor fungal development, such as high-altitude tropical areas.

The primary host for this fungus is Coffea arabica. The disease is destructive because it affects various parts of the tree, including leaves, branches, flowers, and developing berries, which directly disrupts the plant's ability to produce viable yields.

Symptoms of the disease typically appear as dark, necrotic lesions on the leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, it often leads to dieback of twigs and branches. Furthermore, the disease is notoriously aggressive regarding the reproductive stages, causing flowers and young fruits to drop prematurely, severely limiting production.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemiology of Phoma costaricensis. The fungus thrives in cool, wet environments, particularly where persistent fog and high humidity are present. Spores are primarily dispersed through rain splashes and can also be carried by wind or farming equipment across the plantation.

Effective control measures require an integrated approach to reduce the pathogen's impact. Key management strategies include:

  • Pruning and destroying infected branches to remove the source of inoculum.
  • Ensuring adequate spacing between trees to improve airflow and reduce leaf wetness.
  • Application of protective fungicides during periods of high humidity and flower formation.
  • Selecting resistant varieties of coffee where available.
  • Cleaning pruning tools with disinfectant to prevent cross-contamination between trees.
