The disease is caused by the fungus Phoma leveillei, a common plant pathogen known for its ability to produce pycnidia — small, flask-shaped structures that release numerous conidia. These spores are highly resistant to environmental stress and serve as the primary inoculum for seasonal disease outbreaks, allowing the pathogen to persist in soil debris or dormant host tissues.

This pathogen demonstrates a broad host range, attacking various horticultural and field crops. It is particularly known for infecting plants in the Solanaceae and Fabaceae families. The damage caused by Phoma leveillei can be devastating, affecting both the foliage and the root system, which can result in wilting, stunted growth, or complete plant collapse.

Early symptoms typically present as irregular dark lesions on leaves and stems, which often become sunken as the infection progresses.
