Description
Phoma longirostrata is a fungal pathogen belonging to the genus Phoma, known for causing significant leaf spot and stem rot diseases in various plant species. As a facultative parasite, it thrives by decomposing organic matter, but it can switch to pathogenic behavior, severely damaging crop tissues by invading vascular bundles.
The host range of Phoma longirostrata is quite broad, affecting various horticultural and industrial crops. The fungus acts as a necrotrophic pathogen, releasing toxins that kill plant cells ahead of the advancing mycelium, which leads to the formation of necrotic lesions and subsequent structural collapse of the affected plant parts.
Symptoms typically start as small, water-soaked spots on the leaves or stems, which gradually enlarge into dark, sunken lesions. As the infection progresses, these areas often display characteristic pycnidia—minute, black, flask-shaped reproductive structures of the fungus visible to the naked eye, particularly under high-humidity conditions.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the lifecycle of this pathogen. It prefers high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. The fungus survives unfavorable periods in the soil as pycnidia or mycelium within plant debris, making crop rotation and field sanitation the most critical factors in preventing outbreaks in the following seasons.
Management of Phoma longirostrata requires an integrated pest management approach. Key practices include the removal and destruction of crop residues, ensuring adequate aeration in fields to reduce humidity, and selecting pathogen-free seeds. In cases of high disease pressure, targeted chemical fungicides such as systemic triazoles are applied to protect emerging foliage and manage the spread of the pathogen.
