Description
The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Phoma matthiolicola, which belongs to the class of deuteromycetes. This pathogen is known for infecting plants of the Brassicaceae family, specifically targeting the lower stems and root zones. The fungus survives in soil debris and infected plant residues as pycnidia, which serve as the primary inoculum for new infections.
The primary host for this pathogen is Matthiola incana (common stock). The disease manifests as a necrotic lesion on the root collar and lower stem tissue. Because it targets the vascular system of the plant, the fungus disrupts the uptake of water and nutrients, leading to rapid deterioration of the plant's health and aesthetic value.
Symptoms typically begin with the appearance of grayish-brown lesions on the lower stem near the soil surface. As the infection progresses, the lesions darken, and the affected tissue becomes necrotic. Small, black, pimple-like structures called pycnidia appear on the surface of the lesions. Infected plants eventually show signs of wilting, chlorosis, and, in severe cases, total collapse of the stem.
The development of Phoma matthiolicola is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Poor soil drainage and overcrowding of plants are major factors that facilitate the spread of spores. Rainy seasons and lack of air circulation around the base of the plant provide an ideal environment for the pathogen to thrive and infect healthy tissue.
The damage caused by this disease is significant for both professional nurseries and home gardeners, as it can ruin entire flower beds. Control strategies include rigorous sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infected plant material immediately upon detection. Key preventative measures include:

- Implementing strict crop rotation protocols.
- Improving soil drainage to prevent moisture buildup.
- Applying preventative fungicides targeting the root collar area.
