The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Phoma opuntiae, which is a member of the deuteromycetes class. This pathogen specifically targets the succulent tissues of cacti, primarily within the genus Opuntia, inducing necrotizing lesions on the pads (cladodes) and causing significant structural degradation of the plant's surface.
This disease primarily affects various species of the Opuntia genus. Both wild populations in humid regions and ornamental specimens kept in nurseries or home collections are susceptible to infection. The pathogen exploits the succulent tissue as a nutrient source, leading to substantial aesthetic and physiological damage to the host plant.
The symptoms of the infection initially present as small, water-soaked, sunken spots on the cactus surface. As the fungus colonizes the internal tissues, these spots darken, turning into brown or black necrotic lesions. A key diagnostic feature is the emergence of tiny, black, flask-shaped structures known as pycnidia, which serve as the reproductive stage of the fungus.
The disease development is heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high atmospheric humidity and inadequate airflow around the plants. The fungus thrives in damp conditions, and the spread of spores is facilitated by splashing water during irrigation or rain. Mechanical wounds, pests, or improper handling of the plant provide entry points for the fungal mycelium.
The economic and aesthetic impact of this disease is significant, as it often leads to the death of the affected cladode or the entire plant if the infection reaches the vascular core. Preventive measures include strictly limiting overhead watering, ensuring excellent greenhouse ventilation, and using sterile tools for any necessary pruning. Chemical control requires the use of systemic fungicides applied at the first signs of lesion development.
