The disease is caused by the fungus Phoma sabdariffae, a pathogen belonging to the deuteromycetes group. This fungus is a specialized parasite that attacks specific plant tissues, causing localized necrosis. The pathogen persists in the environment through resistant spores and can survive on debris, making it a persistent threat in agricultural fields.
The primary host for this fungus is Hibiscus sabdariffa, often cultivated for its calyces. The disease affects leaves, stems, and flower parts, leading to significant physiological stress. While the impact can vary based on local conditions, the pathogen is known to be highly effective at colonizing host tissues in tropical and subtropical growing regions.
Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, water-soaked spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, darken, and develop a distinct ring pattern. Crucially, the presence of black, pimple-like structures called pycnidia within the centers of the necrotic spots is the primary diagnostic feature of a Phoma infection.

Spread occurs primarily via splash dispersal during rain events or overhead irrigation, which carries spores from infected plant material to healthy tissues.
