Description
Phoma schachtii is the fungal pathogen responsible for the disease commonly known as Phoma leaf spot or Phoma root rot in beets. This fungus belongs to the Coelomycetes group and represents a significant threat to beet production worldwide, affecting both yield quantity and the storage quality of root crops.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are various types of beets, including sugar beet, table beet, and fodder beet. While it can infect plants at the seedling stage, causing damping-off symptoms, it is most frequently observed on mature leaves and the crown area of root vegetables during the late summer and autumn seasons.
The disease is identified by the formation of circular, light-brown spots on the leaves, which are marked by distinctive concentric rings. These spots eventually develop small black fruiting bodies called pycnidia. On the roots, the fungus causes dry rot lesions that can darken and penetrate deep into the flesh, especially when storage conditions are sub-optimal.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development of Phoma schachtii. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide ideal conditions for spore germination and infection. The pathogen can survive for several years in crop residues within the soil, making field sanitation a critical management practice.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies are essential for controlling Phoma infections. Farmers should prioritize the use of certified, fungicide-treated seeds and maintain a strict crop rotation cycle to reduce soil-borne inoculum. Additionally, ensuring adequate boron levels in the soil is vital, as boron deficiency significantly increases the plant's susceptibility to Phoma root infections.
