The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Phomatospora dinemasporium, a pathogen responsible for tissue damage in various plant species. It is primarily categorized as a leaf spot or necrosis-inducing agent that disrupts essential physiological functions such as photosynthesis and nutrient transport within the host plant.

This fungus typically affects a range of ornamental, woody, and occasionally herbaceous plants. It finds a suitable host in plants that have experienced environmental stress, physical damage, or poor soil conditions, as these factors significantly lower the plant's natural defense mechanisms against such fungal pathogens.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as distinct necrotic lesions on leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge and may merge, eventually leading to premature tissue death.
