While many species within this family are primarily saprotrophic, acting as decomposers, certain members can behave as pathogens, initiating necrotic lesions in woody tissues. As a type of fungal pathogen, it poses a specific threat to the structural integrity of trees and shrubs in diverse agricultural and forestry environments.
The primary hosts for these pathogens are woody plants, where the fungi infiltrate the host through wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. In horticultural practice, Phomatosporaceae are frequently identified on trees that have been stressed by environmental factors, pests, or improper maintenance, which compromises the plant's natural defense barriers against fungal colonization.
