Description
Pathogen and disease type. The disease is caused by the fungus Phomopsis diachenii (synonym Diaporthe pastinacae). It is a fungal infection primarily affecting members of the Apiaceae family. The pathogen is characterized by the production of pycnidia, which serve as fruiting bodies that release conidia, enabling the rapid spread of the fungus during favorable environmental conditions.
Host crops. The main host plant for this pathogen is the parsnip (Pastinaca sativa). While it most significantly impacts commercial parsnip production, it can also affect wild relatives within the Apiaceae family. It is particularly damaging to seed crops, as the fungus can colonize the developing seeds, leading to significant yield and quality losses.
Symptoms and signs. The disease manifests as brown or dark spots on foliage, stems, and flower umbels. These lesions often show distinct margins. Over time, small, black, pin-head-sized pycnidia emerge within the necrotic tissue. In advanced stages, severe infection causes wilting, stem rot, and shriveling of the seeds, which negatively impacts seed viability.
Environmental conditions. Phomopsis diachenii thrives in warm, humid climates. The fungus survives primarily in crop debris left in the soil and on infected seeds. The spread of the disease is facilitated by water splashes, wind, and mechanical contact during agricultural operations. High humidity periods during the growing season significantly increase the severity of outbreaks.
- Use only pathogen-free or treated high-quality seeds.
- Implement a strict crop rotation cycle of at least 3-4 years.
- Remove and destroy all infected plant residues after harvest.
- Control weed populations in the Apiaceae family to eliminate alternative hosts.
- Apply targeted fungicides as part of an integrated pest management program during wet periods.
