Description
Phomopsis fennel blight is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phomopsis foeniculi. This pathogen belongs to the group of coelomycetes and is known for attacking various organs of the fennel plant, causing significant structural damage and hindering the production of essential oils and seeds.
The primary host for this fungus is common fennel (Foeniculum vulgare). The infection can manifest in all above-ground parts of the plant, including the stems, petioles, and flower umbels, often causing the entire plant to wilt prematurely when the fungus colonizes the vascular tissues.
Infection symptoms are characterized by the appearance of discolored, sunken lesions on stems. As the infection progresses, small, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia erupt through the epidermis of the plant tissue. These pycnidia release spores that continue the disease cycle, leading to stem breakage and general plant senescence.
Environmental conditions that favor the development of Phomopsis foeniculi include prolonged periods of high humidity and rainfall. Water splashing acts as a major dispersal mechanism for spores, spreading the pathogen from infected residues to healthy neighboring plants within the field or from soil-borne inoculum.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical strategies. Key measures include the use of disease-free, certified seeds and strict crop rotation cycles to reduce soil-borne inoculum. Furthermore, deep plowing to bury infected residues, combined with the application of appropriate fungicides during early growth stages, is essential to minimize yield losses.
