Phomopsis pod blight is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phomopsis folliculicola. It is a significant concern for agricultural production, particularly in soybean crops, where it affects the development of seed pods and can cause substantial yield losses during the maturation stage.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are leguminous plants. Phomopsis folliculicola infects the tissues of the pods, frequently leading to systemic infection that extends to the seeds. This often results in poor seed quality, reduced germination rates, and the presence of fungal structures that degrade the harvest's market value.
Symptoms typically manifest as the appearance of grayish-brown lesions on the pods. As the fungus progresses, these lesions may become covered in small, black, pinhead-sized pycnidia. In severely infected plants, the interior of the pod shows white fungal growth, while the seeds themselves may appear shriveled, discolored, or covered in a white, chalky fungal mat.
Development and spread are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High humidity and rainfall during the pod-filling period provide the necessary conditions for fungal spore dispersal and infection. The pathogen is saprophytic and can survive in crop debris and the soil for extended periods, making it difficult to eradicate once it becomes established in a field.
Management and prevention require an integrated strategy. Essential practices include the use of disease-free certified seeds and effective seed treatment chemicals. Crop rotation with non-host plants and the physical removal or deep incorporation of infected crop residues significantly reduce the initial inoculum level. Additionally, targeted fungicide applications during the reproductive stages of growth help protect the pods from infection.
