It belongs to the Phomopsis genus, which is widely recognized in plant pathology for causing stem and leaf blights. The infection targets the plant's structural tissues, often leading to rapid necrosis.

Affected crops. This pathogen specifically targets various species and hybrids within the Orchidaceae family. It is particularly problematic in commercial greenhouse operations and private collections, affecting popular genera such as Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, and Cattleya. The fungus can infect both the foliage and the flower spikes, compromising the plant's health and appearance.

Symptoms and signs. The disease is characterized by the appearance of dark, sunken spots on the leaves or stems. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often forming irregular patterns. A distinct diagnostic sign is the appearance of small, black, pin-head-sized fruiting bodies known as pycnidia within the center of the necrotic lesions, which release spores to facilitate further spread.

Conditions for development. The development of Phomopsis orchidophila is heavily dependent on high moisture levels and poor airflow. Spores are primarily disseminated through splashing water, such as overhead irrigation or rainfall, and can also be moved through contaminated tools. Warm, humid environments mimic the natural tropical conditions where the fungus thrives.

Damage and management. If left unmanaged, the fungus can quickly spread through an entire collection, causing severe tissue loss and potentially plant death. Effective management strategies involve a combination of cultural and chemical controls:

  • Maintaining proper spacing between plants to enhance air circulation.
  • Avoiding water accumulation on leaf surfaces during watering.
  • Removing and destroying infected plant parts immediately upon detection.
  • Applying appropriate systemic fungicides to inhibit fungal growth and sporulation.
