Description

Pathogen and disease type. The causative agent of American rose rust is Phragmidium americanum, a basidiomycete fungus. It is a specialized, obligate pathogen that causes a typical rust disease. The fungus completes its complex life cycle by infecting the host plant and developing several types of spores throughout the growing season.

Host plants. This fungus is host-specific, attacking mainly species within the Rosa genus. It frequently affects wild roses, shrub roses, and various cultivars of hybrid tea roses. The severity of the infection can vary depending on the host's resistance and environmental conditions.

Symptoms and signs. The disease is characterized by the appearance of bright orange or yellowish spots on the upper leaf surfaces. On the underside of the leaves, small, powdery, rusty-orange pustules develop, which contain thousands of spores. Infected leaves eventually become chlorotic, wither, and drop prematurely, leading to severe defoliation of the plant.

Development and spread. The fungus thrives in warm and humid climates, especially when leaf surfaces remain wet for extended periods. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, splashing water, or garden tools. Densely planted areas with poor air circulation create an ideal microclimate for the rapid development of the disease cycle.

Damage and control. The primary impact of the rust is the loss of photosynthetic area, which significantly weakens the rose bush and reduces its winter hardiness. Management strategies include the removal and destruction of fallen infected leaves, improved spacing to increase airflow, and minimizing overhead irrigation. Chemical control involves the timely application of fungicides, particularly those containing tebuconazole or myclobutanil, to prevent further spread.
