Description
The disease known as shrubby cinquefoil rust is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Phragmidium andersonii. This fungus belongs to the order Pucciniales and specifically targets the foliage of plants within the Dasiphora genus. It is a common problem for gardeners growing shrubby cinquefoil, potentially causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage.
The primary host for this pathogen is the shrubby cinquefoil (Dasiphora fruticosa). While the infection is primarily foliar, its impact on the plant's metabolic processes is substantial. It is most commonly found in ornamental landscapes, nurseries, and public parks where these shrubs are utilized for their long-lasting blooms and hardiness.
Infection manifests as chlorotic, yellow spots on the upper leaf surfaces. As the disease progresses, orange-brown pustules, known as aecia and uredinia, erupt on the undersides of the leaves. Severe infections lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a significant decline in the plant's ability to store energy for the following season.
The life cycle of Phragmidium andersonii is highly dependent on environmental moisture and temperature. Spores are easily disseminated via splashing rain and wind, facilitating rapid spread within a planting site. The fungus survives the winter primarily in fallen leaves, making sanitation a cornerstone of disease management practices.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach:
- Strict sanitation by removing and destroying all infected leaf litter.
- Ensuring proper spacing to improve air circulation and reduce humidity around the foliage.
