The causal agent of Arctic raspberry rust is the fungus Phragmidium arcticum, a member of the Basidiomycota phylum. This pathogen specifically targets plants within the Rosaceae family, impacting their foliage and overall vigor during the growing season.

The primary hosts for this fungus include various Rubus species, most notably red raspberry and stone bramble (Rubus saxatilis). The infection cycle is highly dependent on environmental conditions, making certain geographical regions more susceptible to outbreaks.

Infected plants display characteristic symptoms such as bright orange or yellow pustules on the undersides of the leaves, corresponding to spots on the upper side. As the disease progresses, leaves may yellow, wither, and drop prematurely, leading to significant defoliation.

The proliferation of Phragmidium arcticum is driven by high humidity, prolonged rainfall, and cool temperatures. The fungus overwinters on fallen leaves and stem debris, allowing it to re-infect emerging spring growth if proper sanitation measures are not strictly followed.
