Description

The causative agent of rose rust is Phragmidium mucronatum, a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the order Pucciniales. This fungus is an obligate parasite that requires a living host to complete its complex, multi-stage lifecycle, which is highly adapted to the host's phenology.

Primary hosts for this pathogen include various species and cultivars within the Rosa genus, such as tea roses, climbing roses, and wild briars. The fungus attacks all aerial parts of the plant, including foliage, petioles, succulent stems, and occasionally flower buds.

The disease presents with distinctive bright orange pustules on the underside of leaves during the spring. As the season progresses into summer, these pustules develop into masses of orange urediniospores, followed by the appearance of dark, overwintering teliospores on stems and leaves during autumn.

Favorable conditions for the development of rose rust include high humidity, prolonged leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures ranging between 18°C and 22°C. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind currents, splashing rain, contaminated gardening tools, or human contact during maintenance tasks.

The impact of the infection is severe, resulting in chlorosis, significant leaf drop, and stunted growth. Persistent infection weakens the plant's structural integrity, reduces its overall vigor, and makes it increasingly susceptible to secondary infections and winter damage.
