Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Phragmidium rosae-californicae, which is a specialized pathogen belonging to the rust fungi group. It specifically targets the host plant by colonizing its living tissues and disrupting its vital physiological processes.

This pathogen primarily affects various species of roses. It manifests itself during the growing season, concentrating its activity on the foliage and younger succulent shoots, which are most vulnerable to the intrusion of fungal mycelium.

The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of bright orange, powdery pustules (uredinia) on the underside of leaves. As the infection develops, yellow chlorotic spots appear on the upper surface, and stems may show signs of swelling or distorted growth patterns.

The spread and development of the rust are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, morning dew, and moderate temperatures. Rain splashes and wind currents play a significant role in transporting spores to healthy parts of the rose plant.

The economic and aesthetic impact of this disease is severe, leading to significant defoliation, stunted growth, and a marked reduction in blooming capacity. If left untreated, the plant becomes weakened, making it highly susceptible to secondary infections and winter damage.

  • Remove and destroy all infected plant debris during the autumn season.
  • Improve air circulation by proper pruning and spacing of rose bushes.
