Description
The causative agent of this disease is the rust fungus Phragmidium rosae-pimpinellifoliae. This pathogen is a specialized obligate parasite that completes its life cycle on the host plant, producing several types of spores throughout the season, which allows for repeated infection cycles during the summer.
The fungus primarily affects the burnet rose (Rosa pimpinellifolia). It targets the vegetative parts of the shrub, specifically leaves, petioles, and sometimes young stems, where it interferes with the plant's ability to produce nutrients through photosynthesis.
Symptoms initially appear as small yellowish spots on the upper surface of the leaves. As the infection progresses, bright orange powdery pustules develop on the undersides of the leaves. Towards the end of the season, the fungus produces teliospores, which manifest as dark, blackish spots indicating the maturation of the pathogen and its readiness to overwinter.
The development of the disease is heavily favored by cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity levels. Frequent rainfall and persistent dew provide the necessary surface moisture for the spores to germinate and penetrate the host tissue. Densely planted or shaded gardens often experience higher disease pressure due to reduced air circulation.
Management and prevention strategies are essential to maintain plant health. Growers should focus on sanitation, such as collecting and removing all fallen leaves in autumn to reduce inoculum levels. Additionally, applying preventative fungicide sprays containing copper or systemic compounds during the active growing season is crucial if environmental conditions favor the fungus.
