As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the host plant to complete its complex biological life cycle. The fungus specifically targets plants of the genus Jeffersonia, leading to physiological stress and significant structural damage to the foliage during the growing season.

The primary hosts affected by this fungus are members of the Berberidaceae family, most notably Jeffersonia diphylla.
