The causative agent of this disease is the pathogenic fungus Phragmotelium pauciloculare, which belongs to the order Pucciniales. As a specialized parasite, this fungus predominantly affects plants of the genus Rubus. It acts as an obligate biotroph, relying entirely on the host plant's living tissue for its nutritional requirements throughout its life cycle.

The primary crop affected by this pathogen is the raspberry (Rubus idaeus) and related species within the Rubus genus. The fungus targets the foliage and stems of the plant, drawing nutrients away from the host and disrupting its physiological processes, which can severely stress the plant population.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as small, dusty, bright orange or rust-colored pustules on the abaxial side of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these pustules can spread to petioles and young shoots. Severely infected leaves lose their green color, wither prematurely, and fall off, which significantly reduces the plant's capacity for photosynthesis.

Disease development is favored by cool, wet weather and high humidity levels, especially during late spring and early summer. The spores of the fungus are easily dispersed by wind, rain splashes, and sometimes insects, allowing the pathogen to spread rapidly across large fields or gardens if environmental conditions remain conducive.

The economic impact of this disease is substantial, manifesting in reduced fruit yields, smaller berry size, and weakened plant vigor. Because the infection damages the leaves during the prime growing season, the plant's ability to store energy for winter survival is impaired, potentially leading to plant death or chronic weakness in subsequent years.

  • Sanitation by removing and destroying fallen leaves to eliminate overwintering spores.
  • Ensuring proper plant spacing to improve airflow and reduce humidity levels.
  • Applying fungicides specifically labeled for rust control during the early stages of disease emergence.
