Phycomyces blakesleeanus is a species of zygomycete fungus primarily recognized as a soil-dwelling saprotroph. While it is widely used as a research organism in fungal biology due to its unique growth responses to environmental stimuli, in an agricultural setting, it primarily acts as a decomposer of organic matter. It rarely attacks healthy, vigorous plants, focusing instead on decaying plant tissues.

The fungus thrives on decaying organic material, including crop residues and compost. In greenhouse environments or storage facilities, it may colonize damaged or overripe produce. Although it is not a primary plant pathogen, its presence is a biological indicator of excessive moisture and poor sanitation, which can indirectly foster an environment conducive to other, more aggressive pathogens.

Symptoms of its colonization include the appearance of dense, dark-colored mycelial mats on the surface of organic substrates. Under optimal conditions, the fungus produces long, slender sporangiophores that rise above the substrate. These structures can be very conspicuous and typically indicate that the substrate has reached a high level of saturation and nutrient availability.

The development of this fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and adequate temperature (generally between 18°C and 25°C). It spreads rapidly through the release of sporangiospores, which are easily disseminated by air currents, water splashes, or contaminated equipment, allowing it to colonize new areas quickly if conditions are favorable.

Control and prevention strategies are primarily focused on environmental management rather than direct chemical eradication. Maintaining low humidity levels, ensuring proper ventilation in storage areas, and the prompt removal of decaying plant materials are the most effective methods to limit its presence. Keeping surfaces clean and dry prevents the fungus from establishing a foothold in agricultural production environments.
