Phyllachora leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Phyllachora acaciae. This pathogen is a specific agent that targets species within the Acacia genus. It is categorized as a leaf spot disease, characterized by the development of localized black stromata on the foliage, which are the reproductive structures of the fungus.
The disease primarily affects various acacia species used in forestry and landscaping. Being an obligate parasite, the fungus depends on the living tissue of the host plant to complete its life cycle. It is particularly problematic in nurseries and urban plantings where environmental conditions allow the fungus to thrive and spread throughout the canopy.
Symptoms typically appear during the growing season as distinct necrotic spots on leaves. These spots are often circular or irregular in shape and feature prominent, shiny black crust-like structures known as stromata. As the infection progresses, the spots may coalesce, leading to chlorosis, necrosis, and premature abscission of the leaves, which significantly impacts the overall health of the tree.
