As a member of the Phyllachoraceae family, this fungus acts as an obligate parasite, impacting the photosynthetic capacity of its host plant by colonizing the leaf tissue.
The primary hosts for this fungus are Afzelia species, which are highly valued in tropical forestry. While the disease may not always lead to immediate tree mortality, it significantly reduces the overall health and vigor of young trees, making them susceptible to other secondary stresses.
The disease manifests as distinct, black, circular or irregular stromatic lesions on the leaves. These structures represent the reproductive stage of the fungus.
