Description
The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Phyllachora bakeriana, belonging to the order Phyllachorales. As a specialized phytopathogen, it thrives by invading the foliar tissues of its host. The fungus completes its life cycle by forming distinct structures that disrupt the normal metabolic processes of the host plant.
The host range of this pathogen primarily includes species within the Ficus genus. It is most frequently encountered in nurseries, greenhouses, and indoor environments where plants are kept in close proximity. Tropical and subtropical conditions serve as ideal habitats for the establishment and propagation of the fungus.
The primary clinical signs of the infection include the development of dark, necrotic spots on the leaves, often accompanied by a light-colored halo. The center of these spots typically features shiny, raised stromata, which are the reproductive structures of the fungus. As the lesion matures, the leaf tissue may become brittle, eventually leading to shriveling or perforation.
Development and spread are heavily dependent on high relative humidity, poor air circulation, and moisture retention on the foliage. Spores are primarily disseminated through splashing water, such as rain or overhead irrigation, as well as by air currents. Once introduced into a collection, the disease can spread rapidly if moisture levels remain unchecked.
The economic and aesthetic damage caused by the disease is significant, as it leads to premature leaf drop and the overall weakening of the plant's physiological defense mechanisms. Control measures include the following:
- Prompt removal and destruction of infected leaves to reduce inoculum.
- Improving air circulation around the plants to decrease humidity.
- Regular inspection for early signs of lesions.
- Application of copper-based or systemic fungicides in severe cases.
- Avoiding overhead irrigation to prevent spore transmission.
