Description
Phyllachora leaf spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Phyllachora bersamae, is a specific foliar disease affecting various woody species. As an ascomycete fungus, it develops characteristic structures known as stromata directly within the leaf tissue, which eventually break through the epidermis to release spores.
The primary host for this pathogen is the genus Bersama. The fungus colonizes the mesophyll layer of the leaves, causing localized cell death and disrupting the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis effectively. Over time, the infection can become systemic within the individual leaves, leading to severe chlorosis.
The disease is marked by distinct black, shiny, or matte spots that appear on both sides of the leaf. These spots represent the fungal fruiting bodies. In advanced stages, these lesions cause the leaf to wither and detach prematurely, negatively impacting the plant's energy storage and annual growth cycle.
The spread of Phyllachora bersamae is heavily dependent on moisture. Spores are typically dispersed during humid periods or following rainfall when moisture levels are sufficient for germination. High plant density and poor air circulation in gardens or nurseries significantly increase the risk of rapid disease transmission.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Sanitation is the most critical step, involving the removal and destruction of all fallen leaves and infected plant debris to prevent the overwintering of the fungus. Maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure adequate airflow and applying targeted fungicide treatments can successfully manage the disease before it affects the entire canopy.
