Description
Phyllachora leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Phyllachora lespedezae. This pathogen is a specialized parasite that primarily targets plants within the Lespedeza genus. It is commonly found in forage production fields and wild populations, acting as a stressor that limits the longevity and yield of the stand.
The host range is largely restricted to lespedeza species, which are utilized for hay, soil conservation, and pollinator support. The fungus infects the leaf tissue, where it extracts nutrients, eventually leading to metabolic disruption and loss of foliage vitality in the affected plants.
The primary symptom is the presence of small, circular to irregular black, shiny, and raised structures known as stromata on the leaves. These spots can appear on both the upper and lower surfaces. As the infection progresses, the tissues surrounding the stromata often become chlorotic, leading to necrotic spots and eventual defoliation of the lower canopy.
The development of Phyllachora lespedezae is favored by warm, humid environmental conditions. High rainfall during the growing season facilitates the dispersal of ascospores via wind and splashing water. The fungus survives the winter primarily in infected plant debris, making fall cleanup an essential aspect of disease management.
To control the impact of this disease, agriculturalists should focus on sanitation and cultural practices. Removing infected stubble after harvest, practicing crop rotation, and ensuring proper plant spacing to improve airflow can significantly reduce infection rates. While fungicide applications are rarely cost-effective in large-scale forage, they may be considered for specialized seed production blocks if the disease pressure is extremely high.
