Description

Tar spot of corn is a significant fungal disease caused by the obligate parasite Phyllachora maydis. This pathogen specifically targets the foliage of maize plants, leading to severe leaf damage and reduced photosynthetic capacity, which directly compromises grain yield and development.

The disease exclusively affects maize (Zea mays). While it was historically localized in certain geographical areas, changes in climatic patterns and agricultural practices have led to its emergence as a major concern in various corn-producing regions worldwide, necessitating constant monitoring of fields.

The most characteristic symptom is the formation of small, raised, circular to irregular black spots, known as stromata, which resemble specks of tar on the leaf surface. These spots cannot be easily scraped off. Over time, the surrounding leaf tissue may turn yellow (chlorotic) or brown (necrotic), leading to leaf death if the infection becomes systemic or highly prevalent.

Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity, often associated with frequent rainfall or heavy dew. The spores are primarily wind-dispersed and require moist conditions for germination and colonization. Crop residue is the primary reservoir for the fungus to survive between growing seasons.

Management of Tar spot requires an integrated approach. This includes selecting hybrids with confirmed resistance or tolerance, implementing effective crop rotation to reduce inoculum load, and utilizing fungicide applications at the optimal growth stage (typically VT to R3) to prevent rapid disease progression. Reducing tillage frequency is discouraged in high-risk areas to facilitate the decomposition of infected debris.
