Phyllachora millettiae is a species of sac fungus within the order Phyllachorales. It is primarily recognized as a plant pathogen that causes leaf spot disease, specifically affecting various species of the Millettia genus, which belongs to the Fabaceae (legume) family. The fungus establishes itself within the host tissue, leading to localized damage.

The host range is centered on tropical and subtropical legumes. These plants, often used in botanical gardens or as landscape trees, suffer when infected because the pathogen disrupts the integrity of the foliage. While usually not fatal to a mature tree, the disease can significantly diminish the aesthetic value and physiological vigor of the plant.

The primary symptom is the development of distinct black stromata on the leaves. These structures appear as raised, dark, carbonized spots. As the infection progresses, the area around the stroma may develop chlorotic halos, indicating stress. In severe cases, the infected leaves lose their photosynthetic capacity and may drop prematurely.

The development and spread of Phyllachora millettiae are highly dependent on environmental humidity and temperature. Rainfall plays a critical role in the dissemination of ascospores from the stromata to healthy leaf tissue. High density of host foliage combined with poor airflow creates an environment that facilitates rapid secondary infections.

Management of this fungal disease requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices such as cleaning up leaf litter and pruning infected branches help reduce the inoculum load. If the infestation is widespread, applying appropriate fungicides at the onset of the growing season can protect new growth and prevent further damage to the canopy.
