Phyllachora pterocarpi is a fungal pathogen responsible for leaf spot disease in various species of the Pterocarpus genus. As an ascomycete fungus, it colonizes the leaf tissues of host plants, leading to a condition commonly known as phyllachora leaf spot, which is frequently observed in tropical forestry and landscape settings.
The fungus acts as an obligate parasite, drawing nutrients directly from the living tissues of the host plant. It specifically targets the leaves, where it completes its reproductive cycle. By occupying the mesophyll tissue, the fungus interferes with the plant's ability to carry out normal metabolic processes, including photosynthesis.
The disease is characterized by the presence of prominent, black, shiny stromatic bodies on the leaves. These structures are the fruiting bodies of the fungus. Often, a halo of yellowing or necrotic tissue develops around these black spots, leading to premature leaf senescence and shedding, which can significantly impact the overall tree canopy health.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Phyllachora pterocarpi. The fungus thrives in hot, humid climates where rainfall is frequent.
