Description
Phyllactinia is a genus of ascomycete fungi responsible for various forms of powdery mildew disease. These obligate biotrophs infect a wide range of host plants, deploying specialized structures called haustoria to extract nutrients directly from the host's plant cells, which eventually leads to chlorosis and tissue necrosis.
This pathogen commonly attacks woody plants, trees, and shrubs, including species of hazel, oak, birch, and various nut-bearing trees. The infection primarily targets leaves, but in severe cases, it can spread to stems and fruits, significantly impacting the aesthetic and productive value of the host plant.
The primary symptom is the development of a white, felt-like or powdery mycelial mat on the leaf surface. As the fungal colony matures, tiny, dark-colored fruiting bodies known as cleistothecia appear scattered throughout the white mat, serving as the primary overwintering stage for the fungus.
The development and rapid spread of Phyllactinia are favored by high humidity, warm temperatures, and stagnant air within dense canopies. These conditions facilitate the dispersal of asexual spores, or conidia, which can infect healthy tissue across the garden or orchard within a short period.
The economic impact of Phyllactinia is significant, as it disrupts photosynthesis, causes premature leaf drop, and weakens the overall vigor of the plant. In agricultural settings, this reduces crop yield and limits the plant's ability to store energy for subsequent growth cycles, necessitating proactive management.
