Phyllactinia alnicola is a species of obligate biotrophic fungus that causes powdery mildew disease primarily on alder (Alnus) species. As a member of the Erysiphaceae family, this fungus derives its nutrition from the host plant's epidermal cells, leading to localized metabolic stress in infected leaves and shoots.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of a white or grayish fungal mat on the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves. As the colony matures, the fungus produces small, dark-colored sexual fruiting bodies known as cleistothecia. These structures are crucial for the survival of the pathogen throughout the winter months, allowing the fungus to persist in leaf litter.
Development and disease pressure are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. In densely planted areas where airflow is restricted, the microclimate becomes highly favorable for spore germination and infection, leading to rapid disease spread within a forest stand or ornamental grove.
The detrimental impact on the host plant includes premature leaf senescence and abscission. This loss of photosynthetic capacity hinders the tree’s ability to accumulate reserves for the coming year, resulting in reduced growth rates, decreased vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary environmental stressors such as drought or severe frost.
Effective management strategies focus on sanitation and cultural practices to break the disease cycle:
- Removal and destruction of fallen leaf litter to eliminate overwintering inoculum.
- Improving site ventilation through selective thinning of forest stands or pruning of ornamental trees.
