Phyllactinia angulata is a fungal pathogen belonging to the order Erysiphales, responsible for causing a specific form of powdery mildew. This pathogen primarily attacks various deciduous trees, with a strong host preference for species within the genus Alnus (alder). It functions as an obligate parasite, drawing nutrients directly from the host's epidermal cells.

The disease cycle begins with the germination of spores on the surface of the leaves. As the fungal mycelium colonizes the leaf tissue, it disrupts the normal metabolic processes of the host. This interference with photosynthesis can lead to premature leaf senescence, reduced tree vigor, and increased susceptibility to other biotic and abiotic stressors.

Visible symptoms include the presence of a powdery, whitish-grey mycelial mat, predominantly located on the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves. As the pathogen matures, it produces numerous cleistothecia—small, black, fruiting bodies visible to the naked eye. These structures are crucial for the fungus's survival, as they remain in leaf litter throughout the winter months.

The spread of Phyllactinia angulata is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Warm temperatures coupled with high moisture levels in the canopy provide the ideal climate for rapid conidial production and dispersal. Wind acts as the primary vector, carrying the spores to new host plants, facilitating the rapid escalation of the infection.

Management and prevention focus on reducing the inoculum density and improving tree health. Essential practices include:

  • Sanitary removal and destruction of fallen leaves to eliminate overwintering sites.
  • Improving air circulation within the tree canopy to reduce humidity.
  • Application of specialized fungicides when early symptoms are detected.
  • Monitoring vulnerable stands, especially during periods of wet, humid weather.

Effective control is essential in forest nurseries and ornamental plantings where the aesthetic and physiological health of the trees is a priority. Integrated pest management, combining silvicultural practices with timely chemical intervention, remains the most robust strategy for mitigating the economic and ecological impact of this powdery mildew.
