Description
Phyllactinia kakicola is a fungal pathogen responsible for powdery mildew on persimmon trees. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the living tissues of its host plant to obtain nutrients, which often leads to significant physiological stress for the tree and reduced crop yield.
The primary host for this fungus is the Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki). The disease affects young shoots and leaves, hindering the overall development of the tree. If left unmanaged, the infection can become endemic within a plantation, especially in regions with favorable environmental conditions for fungal growth.
The disease is identified by the appearance of a white, felt-like mycelium on the underside of the leaves. As the infection progresses, it can spread to the upper leaf surface and shoots. Eventually, small, dark fruiting bodies known as cleistothecia develop on the mycelium, which is a distinctive characteristic of Phyllactinia species.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. High humidity levels combined with mild temperatures create an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization. In addition, poor orchard sanitation and lack of air circulation through the canopy significantly accelerate the spread of the pathogen.
The damage caused by Phyllactinia kakicola includes leaf curling, chlorosis, and premature defoliation. This loss of foliage reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, resulting in smaller fruit size and poor sugar accumulation. Furthermore, the tree's overall vigor is compromised, making it more susceptible to other biotic and abiotic stresses.
- Remove and destroy all fallen leaves during the dormant season to eliminate primary inoculum.
- Prune the canopy to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration.
- Apply sulfur-based fungicides or appropriate systemic treatments at the start of symptom onset.
- Maintain optimal fertilization and irrigation to strengthen tree immunity.
