Description

The disease known as apple powdery mildew is caused by the fungus Phyllactinia mali, a specialized pathogen that affects the foliage of apple trees. This fungus is part of the Erysiphaceae family and primarily impacts the underside of leaves, causing significant physiological stress to the host plant throughout the growing season.

The primary host for this fungus is the domesticated apple tree. While it is often classified as a secondary or localized infection compared to other powdery mildews, its ability to cause premature defoliation can lead to a significant decline in tree vigor, resulting in reduced fruit size and weakened growth for the following year.

Typical symptoms include a white, felt-like fungal growth appearing on the underside of leaves. As the infection progresses and reproductive structures called cleistothecia develop, the mycelium often turns brownish. Infected leaves may curl, turn yellow, and eventually drop prematurely, which negatively impacts the tree's ability to store carbohydrates.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of the disease. High humidity levels and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C create an ideal environment for spore germination. The fungus survives the winter primarily in infected plant debris, including fallen leaves, which act as a reservoir for infection in the subsequent spring.

Effective orchard management is essential for control. This includes sanitation practices such as removing and destroying fallen leaves to eliminate overwintering sites. Pruning to ensure good air circulation is also critical. Chemical control, including the use of sulfur-based fungicides or systemic triazole applications, is recommended in orchards with a history of the disease.
