Phyllactinia marissalii is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for a distinct type of powdery mildew affecting various deciduous trees. As a member of the Erysiphaceae family, this fungus targets leaf tissues, effectively compromising the plant's photosynthetic capacity and overall health during the active growing season.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are often found within the Fagaceae family, specifically oak species. The fungus establishes itself on the leaf surface, forming a network of mycelium that penetrates the epidermal layer to absorb nutrients, which can severely weaken the host if not managed appropriately.

Symptoms typically begin as sparse, white powdery patches on the abaxial (lower) leaf surface. As the infection progresses, the mycelium becomes denser and yellowish, eventually producing small, dark-colored fruiting bodies known as cleistothecia, which are essential for the fungus to survive through the dormant winter period.
