Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Phyllactinia papayae, which belongs to the Erysiphales order. This pathogen is a specialized biotroph that extracts nutrients directly from the living plant tissue, typically remaining on the surface of the infected organs.
The primary host for this fungus is the papaya plant (Carica papaya). Infections are commonly observed on leaves, where the pathogen can significantly affect the overall health and vigor of the plant, leading to reduced photosynthesis and crop yield loss.
Symptoms initially appear as white, dusty patches of fungal growth on the underside of the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots can merge, causing the leaves to turn yellow, curl, and eventually drop prematurely, resulting in reduced foliage and exposed stems.
The development of Phyllactinia papayae is favored by conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are common in tropical and subtropical regions. Poor air circulation in high-density plantations significantly increases the risk of rapid spore dissemination throughout the field.
