Phyllactinia yarwoodii is a fungal pathogen belonging to the order Erysiphales, known for causing powdery mildew on various broad-leaved trees. As an obligate parasite, it develops its mycelium on the surface of plant tissues, penetrating the host cells with specialized structures called haustoria to absorb nutrients. This process causes significant metabolic stress to the affected host plants.

This pathogen typically affects woody plants, specifically focusing its colonization on leaf surfaces. While it primarily targets the foliage, in severe cases, it can also manifest on young shoots and petioles. The presence of the fungus disrupts the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, potentially leading to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary environmental stressors.

The primary symptom is the appearance of white, dusty patches on the leaf surface, which eventually coalesce as the mycelial mat expands. Later in the season, the fungus produces small, dark, spherical structures known as cleistothecia. Leaves may eventually become chlorotic, curl, and suffer from premature senescence, which negatively impacts the tree's health heading into the dormant season.

The development of Phyllactinia yarwoodii is heavily dependent on specific climatic conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures during the growing season. The pathogen overwinters as cleistothecia on fallen leaves, which act as the primary inoculum source the following spring. Efficient dispersal is achieved through wind, allowing the disease to spread rapidly across dense stands of trees.

  • Rigorous sanitation by removing and destroying leaf litter during autumn.
  • Pruning to increase airflow and sunlight penetration within the canopy.
