Description

Phylleutypa is a genus of fungi responsible for specific necrotic diseases in various woody plants. The infection primarily targets the bark and cambial tissues, leading to the formation of cankers and localized tissue necrosis that can significantly impact the overall health and structural integrity of the host plant.

The fungus is known to colonize a variety of deciduous trees, including maple and alder species. It typically enters the host through openings caused by environmental stress, such as frost cracks, wind damage, or pruning wounds. Once inside, the mycelium spreads through the bark layers, interfering with the vascular system.

Early symptoms include discoloration of the bark, which eventually develops into distinct lesions. As the disease progresses, fruiting bodies of the fungus emerge through the surface of the bark as small black stroma. Over time, these areas become sunken and cracked, leading to the girdling of smaller branches and eventual dieback.

The development and spread of Phylleutypa are highly dependent on moisture levels. Spore dispersal is most active during periods of high humidity and rainfall, allowing the pathogen to travel via wind or splash to adjacent trees. Trees growing in crowded, poorly ventilated environments are at a much higher risk of widespread infection.

Management focuses on prevention and sanitation. Effective control methods include:

  • Pruning out infected branches well below the point of necrosis.
  • Disinfecting pruning tools to prevent mechanical transmission of spores.
  • Applying protective copper-based fungicides to seal pruning wounds.
  • Ensuring proper plant spacing to improve airflow and reduce micro-humidity levels around the canopy.
