This condition primarily affects tropical and subtropical foliage plants, as well as specific ornamental and fruit species grown in high-humidity greenhouse environments. The fungi tend to thrive on leaves with thick cuticles, using them as a substrate to develop their reproductive structures, which can cover significant portions of the leaf surface.

The symptoms of Phyllobathelium infection include the appearance of small, distinct spots or fruiting bodies (perithecia) on the upper surface of the leaves. Key strategies include improving air circulation through proper pruning and spacing, managing humidity levels in greenhouse settings, and avoiding overhead watering. In cases of significant infestation, application of appropriate fungicides can help reduce the fungal load and protect the healthy foliage.
