Phylloporia is a genus of bracket fungi that function as serious pathogens for various woody plant species. By acting as wood-decaying organisms, these fungi feed on the structural components of the tree, specifically lignin and cellulose. This process compromises the mechanical integrity of the host, leading to various types of rot that eventually destroy the woody tissue.
The host range for Phylloporia includes many deciduous trees and shrubs, with a significant presence in agricultural settings like fruit orchards. Species like Phylloporia ribis are well-documented pests of current bushes and other ornamental shrubs, causing stunted growth and premature tissue necrosis in stems and branches.
Symptoms are typically identified by the presence of woody, perennial fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches of the host plant. Internal symptoms include visible white or brownish rot in the sapwood or heartwood. As the infection progresses, the wood loses its tensile strength, often resulting in hollow stems or branches that break easily under the weight of fruit or during windy weather.
