Pathogen and disease type. The leaf spot disease of onions is caused by the fungus Phyllosticta alliacea, an imperfect fungus that belongs to the Phyllosticta genus. This pathogen is known for infecting the foliage of host plants. The fungus survives and spreads by producing pycnidia, which are small fruiting bodies containing spores that are released during favorable environmental conditions to infect healthy tissue.

Susceptible crops. The primary hosts of this pathogen are plants within the Allium genus. Onion (Allium cepa) and garlic (Allium sativum) are the most economically significant crops affected by this fungus. While it primarily targets commercial crops, it can also affect various ornamental Allium species if they are grown in close proximity to infected fields or under conditions that support fungal growth.

Symptoms and signs of infection. Infection typically starts on the leaves as small, oval, or circular spots. These spots are initially light brown or tan in color, often surrounded by a darker border. As the disease progresses, the lesions expand and merge, causing large areas of the leaf to dry out and turn necrotic. If examined closely, tiny black dots representing the fungal pycnidia are visible within the centers of these necrotic lesions.

Developmental conditions and impact. The development of Phyllosticta alliacea is strongly linked to humid and rainy weather. Poor air circulation in dense plantings creates an ideal microclimate for the fungus to propagate rapidly. The economic impact is significant: the premature death of the foliage reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize, resulting in smaller bulb sizes, lower overall yields, and reduced quality of harvested produce.

Control and prevention measures. Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical intervention. Crop rotation is essential to break the life cycle of the pathogen. Maintaining good field hygiene by removing and destroying crop debris after harvest helps to reduce the inoculum level in the soil. During the growing season, if environmental conditions favor disease spread, applying preventative fungicides can help protect the crop and minimize yield loss.
